Texas Congressman Faces Calls to Step Down Amid Controversy
The political landscape in Texas is heating up as Rep. Tony Gonzales finds himself under increasing pressure from fellow Republicans. Allegations of an affair with a former staffer, who tragically died by suicide, have sparked demands for his resignation.
Recent developments have seen at least four Republican members of the House urging Gonzales to either resign or abandon his campaign for reelection. This follows the emergence of explicit text messages between Gonzales and Regina Santos-Aviles, his former staffer who took her own life in a harrowing incident.
“America deserves better. Tony should drop out of the race,” posted Texas Rep. Brandon Gill. Similarly, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna expressed on social media, “Tony, you should drop out of the race.”
Among those calling for his resignation are GOP Reps. Lauren Boebert from Colorado and Nancy Mace from South Carolina. Gonzales has previously denied the accusations, and his office has not issued a recent comment.
The controversy arises as House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., manages a slim majority. With a narrow four-seat lead, the Republican Party is facing uncertainties, especially with potential retirements looming before midterm elections.
Gonzales is currently under investigation by the Office of Congressional Conduct concerning the alleged affair. The inquiry’s findings are expected to be handed to the House Ethics Committee soon. Speaker Johnson emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “You have to allow the investigations to play out and all the facts to come out.”
Representing Texas’ 23rd congressional district, Gonzales is up for a challenging primary on March 3. The possibility of a repeat runoff against conservative YouTuber Brandon Herrera, whom he narrowly defeated previously, looms in 2024.
Despite the allegations, the House Freedom Caucus’s political division has endorsed Herrera, citing his strong support for gun rights and constitutional freedoms. The endorsement did not reference the ongoing accusations against Gonzales.
