Lawler’s Voting Record Raises Questions About Bipartisanship Claims
Recent analyses cast doubt on New York Representative Mike Lawler’s claims of being a bipartisan politician, revealing his unwavering support for former President Donald Trump’s policies in 2025. According to studies conducted by CAP Action and VoteHub, Lawler aligned with the Trump administration’s positions on every piece of legislation last year.
The research by CAP Action, a progressive think tank, and VoteHub, a nonpartisan media company, examined congressional voting patterns on bills where the Trump White House had taken a clear stance. Lawler’s complete alignment includes support for contentious measures like the Rescissions Act, which reduced federal funding for foreign aid and public broadcasting, and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, anticipated to displace 7.8 million people from Medicaid by 2034.
Despite these findings, Lawler has consistently portrayed himself as a centrist. Representing New York’s 17th District—a region that has historically supported candidates from both major parties—Lawler’s campaign emphasizes his “bipartisan, pragmatic approach to governing.”
In a recent interview with C-SPAN, Lawler criticized former Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene for her lack of bipartisan cooperation. Nevertheless, the studies indicate that Greene was less aligned with Trump’s agenda than Lawler.
A VoteView analysis further highlights the shift in Lawler’s voting behavior, showing that from 2023 to 2024, he sided with his party 81% of the time, a figure that has increased to 92% since 2025. This change suggests a growing partisanship as Trump regained influence.
As Lawler seeks a third term, he is seen as a vulnerable target by Democrats, who have identified his district as a key area for potential gains in the upcoming elections.
