Sen. Kelda Roys Announces Gubernatorial Bid in Wisconsin
As Governor Tony Evers prepares to leave office at the end of his term, State Senator Kelda Roys aims to step into the role, pledging to reduce living expenses for families and resist the policies of President Donald Trump.
In a conversation with UpNorthNews, Roys emphasized the importance of electing strong leaders in swing states like Wisconsin, stating, “In this critical moment of great danger for our country and our democracy, we must have strong governors leading important swing states like Wisconsin that are willing to stand up to this Republican regime to protect Wisconsin families.”
The Campaign Trail
Roys, who represents Wisconsin’s 26th District (covering much of Madison and its nearby areas), is campaigning vigorously for the Democratic nomination. Her goal is to secure a victory in the 2026 gubernatorial election against the Republican contender.
As a mother and small-business owner, Roys is competing in a crowded Democratic primary. With the Democratic primary set for August 11, she expressed her readiness to fight for the values and rights of Wisconsinites, promising to make life more affordable.
Roys criticized the past support for Trump in the 2024 election, noting that many voters hoped he would address financial concerns but were disappointed by his actions once in office.
Background on Kelda Roys
Raised in rural Taylor County, Roys is the daughter of a social worker and a law enforcement officer. Now 46, she is a mother of three young children and stepmother to two adult daughters. Roys, a lawyer, has been a small-business owner for over a decade, managing a real estate brokerage firm.
Previously, she led NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, now known as Reproductive Freedom for All, championing reproductive rights issues.
Addressing Gerrymandering and Affordable Living
Roys views the upcoming election as a unique chance to effect change following years of gerrymandered legislative maps. She envisions a Democratic state Senate and a closely contested Assembly, emphasizing the potential for significant accomplishments with strong gubernatorial leadership.

Roys is committed to tackling healthcare costs, which have surged following the expiration of Affordable Care Act subsidies. She proposes a public option for the state insurance plan to offer Wisconsinites an affordable healthcare alternative.
In education, Roys opposes the school voucher system, advocating for robust public schools accessible to all students regardless of socioeconomic background. She argues that the voucher system diverts essential funds from public education.
Immigration and Law Enforcement
Roys is critical of ICE operations in Wisconsin, advocating for the abolition of practices she believes are un-American. She sponsors the No Secret Police Act to ensure transparency and accountability in law enforcement.
