Democratic state legislators have reached out to President Donald Trump, urging a reversal of a tariff policy introduced a year ago. This request was made through a letter expressing their concerns.
Last year, April 2 was termed “Liberation Day” by Trump, marking the start of tariffs on 90 countries. The administration claimed these measures would bolster American manufacturing and increase job opportunities.
“Instead, your Liberation Day tariffs have liberated our constituents of their savings, their jobs, and their economic security,” the letter reads.
Tariffs function as taxes on imports, affecting American companies, which often transfer the additional costs to consumers. According to a Tax Foundation analysis, retail prices rose by 7% last year due to these tariffs, impacting goods like cars, clothing, toys, and furniture significantly.
Legal disputes have surrounded these tariffs. In February, the U.S. Supreme Court determined that the legal basis for Trump’s tariffs was unlawful, yet it left open the possibility of reinstating them through alternative methods.
Trump’s tariff decisions have fluctuated, adding complexity for businesses and consumers attempting to keep up with the changes.
The letter highlights the negative impact on the manufacturing sector, which has seen a significant loss of jobs, with employment declining every month until December. Economic growth slowed, with GDP increasing by only 1.4% in the last quarter of 2025.
Many economists believe these tariffs have intensified a pre-existing affordability crisis, worsened by ongoing inflation and corporate practices. This issue has escalated since the U.S. engaged in military action in Iran, leading to gas prices surpassing $4 a gallon for the first time in three years.
The letter implores Trump to retract the tariffs, reimburse Americans for tariff expenses, and focus on improving affordability for working families.
“It’s not too late to change course and finally focus on what Americans actually care about,” the letter concludes.
Signatories include legislators from several states like Maryland, New Hampshire, Illinois, Iowa, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Texas, Minnesota, and Michigan. Among them is Maryland Rep. Adrian Boafo, who is campaigning for a congressional seat.
