Swalwell Steps Down Amidst Mounting Allegations
In a surprising turn of events, Rep. Eric Swalwell, a prominent Democrat from California, has decided to resign from Congress following allegations of sexual misconduct. This announcement marks a significant shift in his political journey, especially after suspending his campaign for governor just a day earlier.
Swalwell, who has served seven terms in Congress, addressed the controversy in a social media statement on Monday, acknowledging the pressures from fellow lawmakers pushing for his expulsion. He stated, “Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong. But it’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress.”
Controversy began last week when allegations of abusive behavior against women surfaced online. The issue escalated when at least four women shared their experiences with the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN, accusing Swalwell of misconduct ranging from unwanted advances to rape. Although NPR has not verified these claims, Swalwell has denied them and pledged to contest the allegations.
Swalwell’s resignation adds to the political upheaval, leaving his Bay Area district, a Democratic stronghold, without representation. Following his resignation, Governor Gavin Newsom has 14 days to call a special election to fill the vacancy. This district is noted for being a safe Democratic seat, with Vice President Kamala Harris having defeated President Trump there by a significant margin in the 2024 election.
The allegations have sparked a strong response from Democratic leaders, with figures such as Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi withdrawing their support. More than 50 of Swalwell’s former staffers have also urged him to resign, while House Democrats have called for a thorough investigation.
On Monday, the House Ethics Committee announced an investigation into the allegations against Swalwell, focusing on potential misconduct, including actions towards an employee. However, his resignation effectively halts this inquiry.
This incident has intensified discussions in Congress regarding the handling of misconduct claims against legislators. In a related development, Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, is facing calls to resign over an alleged affair, which he admitted to, prompting him to withdraw from reelection. He announced plans to retire from Congress soon after Swalwell’s resignation.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., has been vocal in demanding the expulsion of both Swalwell and Gonzales, as well as Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who faces charges of misappropriating federal funds. Luna emphasized her stance on social media, stating, “I don’t care what the party affiliation is, if they are corrupt and engaging in illegal activity in Congress I’m going to vote to expel them.” Her sentiments highlight a broader call for accountability and integrity within the legislative body.
