Rising Trend of Looksmaxxing: Risks and Impacts on Young Boys

The Rise of Looksmaxxing: A New Trend Among Young Men

In today’s digital age, a new trend is capturing the attention of young boys, encouraging them to take extreme measures in the pursuit of the ideal physique and facial features. Known as looksmaxxing, this movement is pushing adolescents towards potentially harmful practices, all in the name of enhanced physical appearance.

While many teenage boys are naturally inclined to exercise, looksmaxxing encourages them to consider drastic actions such as steroid use or even elective surgeries. Gene Beresin, a veteran in child psychiatry, notes that this phenomenon has escalated over the past decade, with significant implications for both physical and mental health.

Beresin, the executive director of the Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds at Massachusetts General Hospital, highlights the shift from traditional female-focused beauty standards to a growing preoccupation among males aimed at achieving what is referred to as “ascendancy” or the “perfect body.”

From Online Subculture to Mainstream

Once a niche concept within the online community, looksmaxxing has gained widespread recognition. Parents are advised to observe their sons’ behavior for signs of excessive concern with appearance, which could lead to harmful consequences like body dysmorphia or eating disorders.

Roots in Controversial Ideologies

Looksmaxxing has its origins in the incel community, which emphasizes the importance of physical attractiveness for male success and attention from women. This community often promotes dangerous practices like “bonesmashing” to alter one’s facial structure, rooted in misguided beliefs.

One prominent advocate of looksmaxxing is the streamer Clavicular, known for promoting extreme measures and controversial behaviors. Recently, he was hospitalized after a health scare during a livestream, highlighting the potential dangers of the movement.

Connections to White Supremacy

Another concerning aspect of looksmaxxing is its association with white supremacist ideologies. The movement often revolves around Eurocentric beauty ideals, promoting the idea that achieving the “Chad” ideal—a tall, white alpha male—is the pinnacle of success.

Identifying Warning Signs

Parents should be vigilant for signs that their sons might be influenced by looksmaxxing. Beresin advises looking for changes in self-esteem, eating habits, and any unusual requests for cosmetic procedures.

Encouraging Open Conversations

Valerie Adams-Bass, an assistant professor at Rutgers University, emphasizes the importance of breaking down social barriers that prevent boys from expressing their emotions. She suggests engaging with their interests to initiate discussions on more serious topics, which can help steer them away from harmful behaviors.

Encouraging creativity and diverse interests can provide alternatives to the focuses of looksmaxxing, offering young people healthier ways to channel their energies and thoughts.
