TOLEDO, Ohio — As Ohio gears up for pivotal elections, residents like Alan Isbell are expressing frustration over increasing living costs. “We were told that it was going to be different,” Isbell remarked, highlighting the financial pressures faced by many in Toledo’s 9th Congressional District, a key battleground according to the Cook Political Report.

This district’s voters could play a crucial role in determining the U.S. House of Representatives’ future composition. Ohio also features significant races for the U.S. Senate and governor.

Amidst these political stakes, NPR sought to gauge voters’ sentiments about the cost of living. Many Ohioans echoed Isbell’s concerns, noting changes in grocery shopping habits and travel plans due to escalating fuel prices. This feeling resonates nationwide, as a recent NPR/PBS News/Marist poll indicates over 80% of Americans feel gas prices are straining their budgets, with many attributing the situation to President Trump.

Democrat Marcy Kaptur has represented the district since 1983, but Ohio’s new Republican-leaning congressional map poses challenges. Kaptur’s opponent, GOP nominee Derek Merrin, seeks to capitalize on this shift after a narrow defeat in 2024.

Republican voter Elizabeth Day, voting in Toledo, blamed the Iran conflict for high gas prices and expressed hope for economic relief. “I think that they will do their best to get the federal government to bring prices down as much as they can,” she stated, supporting President Trump’s policies.

While Democrats hold the district seat, Republicans maintain a stronghold in Ohio’s statewide politics. The governor’s race will test whether Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy can overcome President Trump’s declining approval ratings and secure the office.

With Republican Governor Mike DeWine retiring, Ramaswamy faces Democrat Amy Acton in the gubernatorial race.

At another Toledo polling site, resident Hallie Tembo described how her family is adjusting to food price hikes by stocking up on staples and reconsidering travel plans to Cleveland due to fuel costs. The NPR/PBS/Marist poll reveals that gas prices impact not only Democrats but also 80% of Republicans.
