Georgia Representative’s Crypto Trading Under Scrutiny
Georgia Representative Mike Collins, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, has recently caught attention due to his substantial earnings from cryptocurrency trading. Questions have arisen regarding whether these profits resulted from insider knowledge.
Since assuming office in 2023, Collins has executed crypto trades amounting to as much as $745,000. His net worth has reportedly surged by approximately $2.5 million during this period.
Financial disclosures have hinted at potentially suspicious timings of some transactions. Notably, Collins engaged in profitable crypto trades while Congress deliberated on the GENIUS Act, legislation that introduced the first federal regulations for stablecoins, a specific type of cryptocurrency.
The timing of news about the GENIUS Act was likely influential on the asset values Collins traded. The situation is comparable to a congress member acquiring stock in ExxonMobil before proposing a bill advantageous to the gas sector.
In similar stock market scenarios, such actions might be classified as insider trading. In the crypto realm, it often falls under wire or commodities fraud.
According to the disclosures, Collins acquired Ether, a cryptocurrency on the Ethereum blockchain, on April 30, 2025, when priced at $1,794. The following day, as the GENIUS Act was introduced in the Senate, Ether’s value soared to $2,584.
The introduction of the GENIUS Act in the Senate was not publicly announced beforehand. Although Ether is not classified as a stablecoin, the legislation was perceived as beneficial to the broader crypto industry.
Collins made another purchase of Ether on July 8, 2025, at a value of $2,616. The GENIUS Act cleared the House nine days later, propelling Ether’s value to $3,673, marking a 40% increase.
A similar pattern was observed when Collins invested in the memecoin Ski Mask Dog. Memecoins are cryptocurrencies that typically hold minimal intrinsic value, yet can become lucrative when hyped by celebrities or online trends.
Critics argue that memecoins are essentially crafted for pump-and-dump schemes, where asset prices are artificially inflated and then sold off by major shareholders, maximizing their profits while devaluing the asset for others.
Collins acquired Ski Mask Dog multiple times between September 10 and November 29, 2025. Unusual Whales, an X account monitoring market anomalies, highlighted these transactions on December 3, 2025. Collins replied to the post with an image of Pepe the Frog, a meme sometimes used to suggest a savvy demeanor.
Pepe the Frog, however, is also recognized as a symbol associated with white supremacy by far-right groups.
The popularity of Ski Mask Dog surged following the Unusual Whales post, with its trading volume escalating from $1,384,313 to $37,468,161, marking a 2,606% increase.
Ski Mask Dog has since included Collins in its promotional efforts and has even endorsed him as a potential presidential candidate for 2028.
In a related instance, the House Ethics Committee fined North Carolina Representative Madison Cawthorn $14,000 in 2021 for engaging in similar activities. Cawthorn heavily invested in the Let’s Go Brandon memecoin and advocated for its purchase without adhering to disclosure rules.
Collins has consistently denied any wrongdoing in relation to his crypto dealings. Currently, there is no evidence of him being investigated or accused of criminal activities.
Incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff, Collins’ opponent in the upcoming November election, has prioritized combating political corruption and self-enrichment as part of his reelection platform.
A July poll conducted by AARP indicated that Ossoff holds a significant lead over Collins. However, this gap is anticipated to decrease as the election date approaches.
