Pope Leo XIV has once again called for peace in the troubled regions of Sudan and Ukraine, emphasizing the necessity for leaders to prioritize civilian safety and adhere to global humanitarian standards.
During his Angelus address held in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, the Pope voiced grave concerns over the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Sudan. Reports indicate that over 500,000 individuals are currently deprived of vital supplies due to a sustained military blockade.
“I continue to follow with concern the tragic situation in Sudan, especially in the city of el-Obeid,” stated Leo. “In expressing my spiritual closeness to all the people of the nation, I renew my appeal to those in authority to guarantee humanitarian corridors for the civilian population.”
Sudan is caught in a severe conflict involving the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). The continuous clashes have led to massive displacement, food shortages, and numerous attacks on civilians.
The Pope also addressed the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, expressing sorrow over the escalating civilian casualties.
“These incidents are occurring one after another; indeed, they are multiplying, resulting in ever-increasing numbers of civilian victims, including children,” he remarked.
Reiterating his plea for adherence to international humanitarian law, Pope Leo urged both parties to refrain from targeting civilian areas.
“In the face of so much anguish, I renew my heartfelt appeal for humanitarian law to be respected and for both sides to cease attacks on civilian targets,” Leo emphasized.
“War only begets more war and causes immense suffering.”
In addition to addressing global conflicts, Pope Leo reflected on the Gospel story of Jesus walking on water, urging Christians to maintain their faith in Christ during uncertain and fearful times.
He noted that the disciples were transformed by Christ’s presence and suggested this miracle serves as a reminder for believers to maintain hope despite life’s challenges.
“Whatever the circumstances, Jesus does not abandon us, and if we humbly welcome him into the boat of our lives – through prayer, the sacraments and listening to his Word – in him, we will find peace, light and strength for our journey,” he stated.
The Pope encouraged people of faith to invite God into their lives through prayer, participation in the sacraments, and attentive listening to Scripture, asserting that these practices provide Christians with strength and guidance amidst modern challenges.
His message was part of a broader appeal for peace, compassion, and hope as conflicts continue to impact millions worldwide.
