Mendoza’s Comments on Tax Breaks Misrepresented in New Ad
A recent advertisement by the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) is drawing attention for its portrayal of Democrat JoAnna Mendoza’s tax policy stance. The ad, which can be viewed here, suggests that Mendoza is against tax breaks for working families in Arizona. However, her criticisms were actually directed at tax cuts benefiting billionaires.
CLF, a political action committee based in Washington D.C., is known for supporting Republican candidates in the U.S. House races. This election cycle, Mendoza is running against the current officeholder, Rep. Juan Ciscomani, in a district where the competition is particularly fierce.
The advertisement claims that “Mendoza lobbied to make your life more expensive,” featuring a soundbite of Mendoza stating, “there should be no new tax cuts, no new tax credits, or sales tax exemptions.” This snippet is also featured in a similar ad from Ciscomani’s campaign.
These remarks were made by Mendoza during a 2020 online forum organized by the Democrats of Greater Tucson. In the extended version of the video, Mendoza discusses how Republican policies have reduced funding for essential services and education to provide financial relief to affluent individuals and large corporations. She emphasized her stance against further tax reductions that disproportionately favor these groups.
“We know that there have been enormous tax breaks and tax cuts for wealthy folks and for corporations,” Mendoza stated. “So moving forward, there should be no new tax cuts, no new tax credits, or sales tax exemptions.”
In contrast, Ciscomani endorsed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which involves a $1 trillion reduction to Medicaid funding. This legislation prioritizes tax cuts for the wealthy, potentially leading to a loss of health insurance for up to 500,000 residents in Arizona.
“JoAnna Mendoza is focused on lower costs and tax cuts for Arizona families, not tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations,” affirmed Kyle McCarthy, a spokesperson for Mendoza’s campaign.
