Former FBI Agents Face Charges Over Hunter Biden Investigation
Two former FBI agents have been charged by the Justice Department for allegedly making false statements to Congress during their involvement in investigations related to Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden.
Bradley Benavides, 56, and Nikki Floris, 46, are confronted with charges stemming from their 2023 congressional testimonies. While these charges have been filed by complaint, an indictment from a grand jury has not yet been secured.
The scrutiny surrounding Hunter Biden began when The New York Post reported that his laptop was left at a Delaware repair shop in 2019. It later came into the possession of Rudy Giuliani, former President Trump’s lawyer, just before the 2020 presidential election.
There have been ongoing accusations from Republicans that the FBI mishandled both the laptop and the investigation into Hunter Biden. The younger Biden was convicted on federal gun charges and later admitted guilt on separate tax-related offenses.
In a statement on X, Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., remarked that Floris and Benavides “allegedly lied to Congress about their roles in the FBI’s Hunter Biden investigations, with one claiming they only learned about it from Wikipedia — despite evidence showing their involvement in helping shape the public narrative about Hunter Biden’s laptop right before the election.”
Facing Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui in federal court, both defendants were acknowledged for their “sparkling backgrounds” in law enforcement and their dedication to public service. Faruqui highlighted the unusual nature of charging them by complaint for actions considered “quite old.”
The two are scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing this Tuesday.
The controversial laptop reportedly contained information implicating Joe Biden in wrongdoing during his campaign as the Democratic nominee, with some data verified as belonging to Hunter. This prompted House Republicans to initiate an impeachment inquiry into President Biden. However, no evidence has been presented to prove that Joe Biden benefitted financially from his son’s business transactions.
In December 2024, before his term ended, President Joe Biden issued a full and unconditional pardon for Hunter Biden.
