Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate race, becomes first Muslim Senator

Abdul El-Sayed Secures Historic Win in Michigan’s Senate Race

The U.S. Senate election in Michigan has concluded with a groundbreaking outcome as Democrat Abdul El-Sayed makes history. The Associated Press has declared El-Sayed the winner, marking a significant political shift in this key Midwest battleground.

El-Sayed’s victory over former Republican Representative Mike Rogers is notable not only for his policy positions but also because he becomes the first Muslim American to hold a Senate seat. The 42-year-old’s campaign focused on issues such as single-payer healthcare and reducing corporate influence in politics, appealing to a broad base, especially younger and infrequent voters.

Despite not identifying as a democratic socialist, El-Sayed’s campaign gained the support of influential figures on the political left. His candidacy, however, was not without controversy. Some of his statements on Israel strained relations with Jewish voters, and his association with left-wing streamer Hasan Piker during the primaries drew criticism. El-Sayed later apologized for comments made after a violent attack on a synagogue preschool in metro Detroit.

Michigan’s Senate race was closely monitored as it tested the viability of an antiestablishment candidate. El-Sayed’s primary win over Rep. Haley Stevens by a narrow margin of about 1 percentage point highlighted internal debates within the Democratic Party. Stevens, initially backed by prominent Michigan figures such as Governor Gretchen Whitmer and retiring Senator Gary Peters, ultimately endorsed Rogers in the general election.

Throughout the campaign, El-Sayed faced Islamophobic rhetoric from his opponent and other Republicans, including President Trump, who endorsed Rogers. Despite initially condemning Trump’s false claims of election fraud, Rogers later embraced some of these positions, attempting to distance himself from certain policies, such as those concerning the war in Iran.

El-Sayed, a Detroit native with a background in public health, first gained political attention with his 2018 gubernatorial run. His recent Senate victory positions him as a significant figure in the Democratic Party, especially as Michigan’s role becomes increasingly vital in the presidential nominating process for 2028.
