Growing Spiritual Curiosity Among Britain’s Younger Generations

A surge of interest in faith among Britain’s youth suggests a potential revival of religious engagement. Recent surveys highlight a growing trend of spiritual curiosity, notably among Generations Z and Alpha.
The Bible Society’s research earlier this year indicated a “quiet revival” in Britain, especially among Generation Z—those born around the turn of the millennium. This cohort, particularly young men, is showing renewed interest in attending church and exploring traditional faith practices.
Complementing these findings, Youth for Christ (YfC) has unveiled insights from their “Z-A Growing Spirituality” report. This report focuses on Generation Alpha, aged 11 to 18, revealing that more than half identify as Christian (52%), though only 35% see themselves as “followers of Jesus,” marking a 12% increase over five years.
The report indicates that approximately 65% of young people view local churches positively, while a minority of 6% hold a negative perception. Furthermore, 53% expressed willingness to attend church if invited by a friend, underscoring the power of personal connections.
Conducted by DJS Research for Youth for Christ, the study analyzed responses from 1,009 young individuals across the UK, offering a snapshot of their social and spiritual landscapes. A significant finding was the preference for online connections over in-person interactions, despite a skepticism towards online influencers, with family and friends seen as more reliable information sources.
Laura Hancock, the lead researcher, commented, “In 2025, many are spending more time in isolated environments, in the safety of a home with those they trust, engaging with the world primarily through their screens. This shift has deeply influenced not only whom they trust, but also what shapes their beliefs and decisions.”
The research also highlights the importance of Easter and Christmas as key moments for church outreach, with increasing attendance during these festivals. Hancock emphasized the urgency of engaging with youth, stating, “Reach out and get involved with the young people in your communities … The time is now. It is urgent. Young people are looking for Jesus and waiting for someone to tell them about him.”
