In a significant development, a Colombian priest who had mysteriously vanished has returned safely, bringing relief to his community and highlighting ongoing concerns about the safety of religious leaders in the region.
Father Carlos Saúl Jaimes Guerrero, a member of the Order of Saint Augustine, disappeared in mid-June while en route to an appointment in the rural Viotá Municipality of Cundinamarca Department. His car was discovered with the engine running, but he was missing, with no signs of struggle or theft.
This incident echoes a previous tragedy in Colombia, where eight religious and social leaders were lured to a meeting by a splinter group of FARC and subsequently found in a mass grave.
On July 27, the Order of Saint Augustine announced that Father Guerrero had been released unharmed by an unidentified armed group and was recovering under their care. Details about his captivity and release remain scarce, with requests for privacy made on his behalf.
The disappearance spurred appeals from churches, human rights organizations, and Father Guerrero’s mother, seeking information and his safe return.
Anna Lee Stangl, Director of Advocacy at Christian Solidarity Worldwide, expressed relief at his release, stating, “CSW welcomes the release of Father Carlos Saúl Jaimes, though we remain concerned that he was disappeared in the first place.”
She further urged the Colombian government to enhance protection for religious leaders, pointing out that despite ongoing threats, they were recently removed from a list of individuals eligible for special protection.
CSW emphasizes that incidents like these underscore the necessity for additional security measures to safeguard faith leaders from armed groups.
