In a troubling turn of events, a 76-year-old man faces charges following a distressing incident at a Christian summer camp where eight children were reported ill. This incident unfolded at Stathern Lodge, a site managed by the Braithwaite Gospel Trust in East Midlands.
John Ruben, hailing from Ruddington, Nottingham, was initially apprehended on the suspicion of administering a harmful substance with the intent to cause harm. Recently, Nottinghamshire Police revealed that Ruben is now facing three charges of wilful ill-treatment of a child, affecting three different children.
Ruben, with a background as a veterinarian and primary school educator, is currently held in custody and is scheduled to appear before Leicester magistrates’ court on Saturday.
According to Nottinghamshire Police, “The owners and operators of Stathern Lodge are independent from those people who use or hire the lodge and are not connected to the incident.”
Assistant Chief Constable Leona Scurr stated, “We understand that legal proceedings are now active in relation to this incident so therefore it would not be appropriate for us to comment further. However, we understand that this incident would have caused serious concerns for many people in our local community. We would like to reassure them that we are working with partners including Leicestershire Police with their investigation. The affected children were hospitalized on Monday but have since been discharged. Their condition was initially reported to Leicestershire Police on Sunday, yet police arrived on the following day. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is scrutinizing the response delay by Leicestershire Police.
The IOPC spokesperson mentioned, “The investigation will look at whether there were any breaches of professional behaviour – namely a failure to carry out duties and responsibilities – that resulted in a delay in Leicestershire Police’s response to what was later declared a critical incident.”
Responsibility for the ongoing investigation has been transferred to the East Midlands Special Operations Unit’s major incident team.
The incident has drawn significant media attention and has deeply unsettled the residents of Plungar village. A triage tent was set up in the village hall to manage the situation. A local resident told The Telegraph, “It’s like every parent’s worst nightmare, dropping your child at summer camp and then being told they might have been poisoned.” They described the scene as “pretty chaotic, with emergency workers running around everywhere” and noticed “a few children in tears as they walked into the hall.”
