In the wake of a tragic accident in Lisbon, Pope Leo XIV has reached out with prayers and condolences, as the city grapples with one of its worst tragedies in recent memory. The incident, which occurred this week, resulted in at least 17 fatalities and left 21 individuals injured.
The Pope conveyed his “heartfelt condolences” through a telegram to Cardinal Rui Manuel Sousa Valério, the Patriarch of Lisbon, expressing his “spiritual closeness” to those affected. This message comes as the city mourns and seeks answers following the unfortunate event.
The calamity took place on Wednesday evening when the historic Elevador da Glória funicular apparently malfunctioned while descending a hill during the busy rush hour. Witnesses reported that the carriage accelerated uncontrollably, ultimately overturning and hitting a pedestrian.
The tragic accident claimed the lives of both locals and international tourists. Among the deceased are British nationals Kayleigh Smith, 36, and William Nelson, 44. A third British victim has yet to be identified by authorities.
Despite the funicular having undergone routine maintenance, the precise reasons behind the accident remain under investigation by the operating company.
Pope Leo XIV, in a message delivered by the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, also prayed “for the complete recovery of the injured” and conveyed “the strength of Christian hope for all those affected by this disaster”.
The message further expressed “special gratitude to those who took part in the rescue operations” and imparted the Pope’s Apostolic Blessing, particularly to the bereaved families.
As Portuguese authorities initiate a comprehensive investigation into the crash, support and tributes continue to flow in for the victims and their families.
