NRSC Faces Criticism Over Edited Video Linking Roy Cooper to Tragic Stabbing
A recent video released by the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has come under scrutiny for misleadingly suggesting that former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is responsible for the stabbing death of Iryna Zarutska.
Zarutska’s murder occurred last month on a Charlotte transit train, allegedly committed by Decarlos Brown. The incident has been politicized by Republicans, who argue that Brown, a repeat offender, would have been incarcerated if not for policies attributed to Democratic leadership.
The video in question features an edited segment implying that Cooper supported the pretrial release of criminal defendants, a policy linked to a racial equity task force he initiated in 2020. However, Cooper’s actual statement indicated the task force’s intent merely to study such policies, which were never enacted.
This contentious clip is part of a digital advertisement that also includes remarks from Cooper’s Republican challenger, Michael Whatley, who echoes the misleading claims.
“[Brown] was let out on the revolting door of the Democrats’ soft on crime policies, led by Gov. Roy Cooper,” Whatley asserts in the ad.
Whatley’s assertions have been debunked by several outlets, including Politico, Axios, and WRAL. Despite this, the NRSC has not removed the ad.
The ad draws parallels to the notorious Willie Horton ad from the 1988 presidential campaign, which aimed to link Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis to a crime committed by a furloughed prisoner. That ad is often cited as an example of racially charged political messaging.
During Cooper’s tenure as governor, North Carolina saw a reduction in crime rates. From 2017 to 2023, he implemented laws increasing penalties for gang activity, gun-related offenses, and drug trafficking, along with measures to enhance law enforcement resources and compensation.
The NRSC has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the video’s content and the subsequent backlash.
