Listeria Outbreak Update: Prepared Pasta Products Under Scrutiny
A recent listeria outbreak linked to ready-to-eat pasta meals has resulted in six fatalities and 27 illnesses across 18 U.S. states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This concerning development has prompted increased scrutiny from health officials nationwide.
Federal health authorities have confirmed that nearly all individuals affected by this outbreak required hospitalization, with cases reported from states including California, Florida, and Texas, among others. Tragically, one of the ill was a pregnant woman who experienced a fetal loss due to the infection.
“Since the last CDC case count update on September 25, 2025, a total of 7 new illnesses from 3 states have been reported, with 2 additional deaths reported,” stated the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The outbreak, which began in June, has led to numerous product recalls. Initially, listeria concerns triggered the recall of several chicken fettuccine Alfredo meals produced by FreshRealm Inc. These products were sold under various brand names, including Home Chef at Kroger and Marketside at Walmart. Further testing confirmed the presence of the same listeria strain in additional FreshRealm products, leading to further recalls.
Additional products affected include Walmart’s Marketside Linguine With Beef Meatballs & Marinara Sauce and Trader Joe’s Cajun Style Blackened Chicken Breast Fettuccine Alfredo. Both items were linked to Nate’s Fine Foods, a supplier known for providing precooked pasta to the food service industry.
By late September, Nate’s extended its recall to encompass other precooked pasta variants. The decision followed positive listeria tests on linguine samples, which prompted a broader recall of products with specific use-by dates.
In early October, recalls expanded to include various pre-made pasta salads and heat-and-eat dishes available at major retailers like Trader Joe’s, Albertsons, and Walmart. Nate’s issued a statement apologizing for the situation and affirming their commitment to consumer safety, stating they are working closely with health authorities to resolve the issue.
Understanding Listeria and Its Risks
Listeria, a bacteria causing listeriosis, primarily affects vulnerable populations such as pregnant individuals, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms range from mild, flu-like conditions to severe complications such as miscarriages or life-threatening infections.
The CDC highlights that symptoms may appear from as soon as the day of consumption to up to 10 weeks later. Confirming the outbreak’s full extent is challenging, as not all individuals seek medical care, and detecting an outbreak can take weeks.
Consumers are advised to discard any suspect meals and thoroughly clean any surfaces or containers that may have been contaminated. The FDA continues to assess the need for further recalls in collaboration with Nate’s Fine Foods.
The U.S. has witnessed multiple listeria outbreaks in recent years, with significant incidents involving products like deli meats and baked goods. These outbreaks underscore the critical importance of stringent food safety practices.
