Planned Parenthood Executives’ Salaries Highlight Income Disparities in Nonprofit Sector
Recent revelations about the salaries of Planned Parenthood executives have sparked a discussion about compensation in the nonprofit sector. On average, the CEOs of Planned Parenthood’s regional affiliates earn over three times more than typical nonprofit CEOs, according to a report by the American Life League.
The “2025 Report on Planned Parenthood CEO Compensation” was released on Thursday, presenting data from fiscal year 2023. It reveals that the average pay for these CEOs has risen by 11% since 2020, reaching $352,661.
The report critiques Planned Parenthood’s financial priorities, stating, “In the US, the average salary for a nonprofit CEO is roughly $117,000 a year. Planned Parenthood more than triples that with an average annual CEO salary of $352,661.”
Planned Parenthood’s top executive, CEO Alexis McGill Johnson, receives a salary of $904,014, making her the highest-paid in the organization. Other notable salaries include Executive Vice President and CFO Dawn Lugens at $619,971 and COO Vickie Barrow-Klein at $559,239.
The highest-paid affiliate CEO is Sue Dunlap of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, with earnings of $875,942, followed by Stacy Cross of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte at $725,671. Several other affiliate CEOs earn over half a million dollars annually, such as Jon Dunn and Ken Lambrecht.
American Life League National Director Katie Brown Xavios commented on the report, criticizing the use of taxpayer money: “Hundreds of millions of our tax dollars are forked over to the oligarchs at Planned Parenthood.”
Lead researcher Katherine Van Dyke highlighted the disparity between the organization’s claimed financial difficulties and the growth in executive compensation. She urged for a reevaluation of government funding, stating, “It is time to defund this very wealthy and profitable abortion megacorporation.”
Planned Parenthood Los Angeles reported the highest income among affiliates, surpassing $155 million, with several others generating over $100 million. The report noted that $699.3 million of Planned Parenthood’s total revenue comes from federal funding.
An op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, tied to the incoming administration’s plans, suggested potential cuts to Planned Parenthood’s funding, reflecting ongoing debates about financial accountability in nonprofits.
