Michael Whatley Advocates for Market-Based Health Care Reforms
In a recent discussion, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Michael Whatley expressed a desire to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, which is crucial for nearly 1 million residents of North Carolina.
During a radio interview on November 12, Whatley stated, “When you look at structurally what has happened since they passed Obamacare, prices have absolutely gone through the roof. We need to get the government out of the way and get back to market-driven solutions on health care.”
Whatley’s statements mirror the sentiments found in a report from the Heritage Foundation titled A Plan to Repeal and Replace Obamacare, which supports replacing the existing health care framework with market-oriented strategies. The Heritage Foundation is also known for its Project 2025 initiative.
Despite Whatley’s assertion, data suggests that while health care costs have risen since Obamacare’s implementation in 2010, the rate of increase has actually slowed compared to the period before its establishment.
Moreover, Whatley commended Senate Republicans for halting an extension of tax subsidies aiding Americans in affording Obamacare. This move resulted in a 44-day government shutdown, briefly affecting SNAP benefits.
The Senate is anticipated to revisit the vote on extending these subsidies next month, but many political analysts are skeptical about its passage. If the subsidies are not extended, approximately 888,000 North Carolinians could face a doubling of their health care premiums.
Whatley is campaigning to replace retiring Sen. Thom Tillis, with former Governor Roy Cooper, a Democrat, being his probable opponent. Health care policy is expected to be a pivotal issue in this race.
During his tenure, Cooper successfully expanded Medicaid in North Carolina, providing 600,000 individuals with affordable health insurance. Contrastingly, Whatley has endorsed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which could remove 700,000 individuals from Medicaid.
A survey conducted on November 18 by the conservative-leaning Carolina Journal reveals Cooper leading Whatley with a 46% to 42% margin. This race is perceived as crucial in determining Senate control.
