Controversy Erupts as Immigration Officials Detain Individuals on Church Grounds in California
Amid rising tensions over immigration enforcement, a Roman Catholic bishop has openly criticized federal agents for their operations within church properties, sparking a debate over the boundaries of such enforcement actions. In a letter shared on Facebook, Bishop Alberto Rojas of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino voiced his concerns over the “change and increase in immigration enforcement” affecting his community. Bishop Rojas, originally from Mexico, expressed that the enforcement tactics are causing distress among his parishioners.
Rojas condemned the indiscriminate nature of these actions, stating, “Authorities are now seizing brothers and sisters indiscriminately, without respect for their right to due process and their dignity as children of God.”
Offering reassurance to affected communities, Rojas emphasized the church’s support, declaring, “We join you in carrying this very difficult cross.” Despite acknowledging the need for public safety, he criticized the tactics used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, noting incidents where individuals were detained in everyday settings.
John Andrews, the Director of Communications for the Diocese of San Bernardino, confirmed that ICE agents conducted enforcement actions at St. Adelaide Church’s parking lot in Highland, detaining individuals who were not affiliated with the parish. They were reportedly pursued onto the church grounds.
Additional reports indicated that ICE agents took a male parishioner into custody at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Montclair.
Bishop Rojas highlighted the widespread fear and anxiety caused by these enforcement actions, arguing they are “not of the Gospel of Jesus Christ — which guides us in all that we do.” He called on political leaders to “reconsider and cease these tactics immediately,” advocating for a more humane and comprehensive approach to immigration reform.
The bishop also addressed the anti-immigration enforcement protests that led to President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard in California cities. Rojas urged protesters to maintain peace, warning that military presence might escalate tensions.
This enforcement activity follows the Trump administration’s recent policy shift, which reversed protections for “sensitive areas” like churches, as outlined in a directive from the Department of Homeland Security. The policy change was defended by DHS, with officials stating, “Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s churches and schools to avoid arrest.”
