The Potter’s House in Dallas is entering a new era of leadership as Bishop TD Jakes, the church’s influential founder, prepares to pass the mantle to the next generation. His daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, along with her husband, Pastor Touré Roberts, is set to take on senior pastoral roles within the year.
Since its inception in 1996, The Potter’s House has established itself as a global ministry, attracting thousands of attendees each week, both in-person and online. This leadership transition coincides with Bishop Jakes’ decision to focus on economic and community initiatives while maintaining his position as Chairman of the Board and spiritual overseer.
Jakes emphasized the necessity for ministries to evolve in response to modern social and economic challenges. The elevation of his daughter and son-in-law is part of a carefully considered strategy to ensure the church’s continued growth and relevance.
Having relocated from Los Angeles to Dallas in 2022, the Roberts have gradually assumed more significant roles, becoming assistant pastors in 2023. They also lead their own initiatives, ONE | A Potter’s House Church and Woman Evolve.
With a focus on bridging generational divides and adapting to cultural shifts, the Roberts aim to uphold The Potter’s House’s mission. Bishop Jakes remarked, “Elevating Pastor Touré and Pastor Sarah as the new senior pastors of The Potter’s House, we will honour our rich history while embracing a future that demands innovative, ministry for the coming age.”
He added, “This elevation is not a departure but a rebirth. I will never stop preaching and will continue to minister. This moment isn’t an ending, it’s an expansion. We are not only passing a mantle we are multiplying impact. Leadership is not static, it is dynamic. It demands the courage to evolve.”
Pastor Touré expressed: “We are committed to building a ministry that carries the heart of Bishop Jakes into a future that is both faithful and forward-thinking.”
Pastor Sarah commented: “This is not just a call to serve. It’s a mandate to lead with compassion, clarity, and courage.”
The announcement follows a series of significant events for Bishop Jakes, including a health scare in November 2024 and the conclusion of the International Leadership Summit (ILS) in Orlando. The summit, themed “Changing of the Guard,” highlighted the importance of preparing future leaders across different fields.
While stepping back from everyday pastoral duties, Bishop Jakes plans to enhance his influence through various ventures with the TD Jakes Group. These include real estate projects, social impact initiatives, and a collaboration with iHeartMedia to produce a series of podcasts.
His upcoming podcast, “My Next Chapter,” will explore critical societal issues and motivate listeners to take action. Additionally, Bishop Jakes will host the Good Soil Forum in Dallas this June to assist small business owners, followed by an economic empowerment summit on Martha’s Vineyard in August.
