The Catholic Church’s stance against assisted suicide remains firm as the topic stirs debate within the House of Lords in England and Wales. This comes on the heels of the Terminally Ill (Adults) End of Life Bill, which passed the House of Commons last year but faces an uncertain future in the Lords.
Despite its initial progress, the bill is likely to falter as the government has decided against allocating further parliamentary time to it. Right to Life CEO, Alisdair Hungerford-Morgan, commented that the bill is essentially “dead” after it was deemed neither “safe nor workable” following extensive scrutiny.
Adding to the conversation, the Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, the Most Reverend John Sherrington, has highlighted significant concerns regarding the potential impact of the bill on Christian end-of-life care providers.
“This bill is wrong in principle as assisted suicide is the direct taking of life. In practice, the bill is a threat to truly compassionate care at the end of life,” Archbishop Sherrington stated.
He elaborated that the bill, in its current form, could force Christian hospices and care homes to partake in assisted suicide, a situation worsened by inadequate conscience clauses, thus risking the lives of the vulnerable as seen in other countries.
There is speculation that if compelled by law to facilitate assisted suicide, many Christian care homes might choose closure over compliance, potentially worsening the state of end-of-life care services in Britain.
In addition to voicing these concerns, Bishop Sherrington called for prayer for individuals facing the end of life and for lawmakers deliberating on this sensitive issue.
“We are facing the threat of a profound change in our culture which would happen if assisted suicide were to be legalised. I urge you to pray for parliamentarians who continue to consider this matter,” he emphasized.
The Catholic Church plans to hold a “Holy Hour for the dignity of life” on 19 April at 4:30 pm, aimed at uniting believers in prayer for the promotion of a culture of life.
