In the heart of Northern Ireland, the town of Ballymena is witnessing significant unrest. Local church leaders are speaking out against the violence and racism arising in the wake of a serious incident.

Recently, a leisure centre in County Antrim, which was serving as a temporary refuge, became the target of arson. This attack was carried out by masked individuals amid ongoing disturbances in Ballymena.

The turmoil began following an alleged sexual assault involving a girl and two teenage boys on Monday. The accused, who face charges of attempted oral rape, have denied the allegations, with the proceedings conducted with the help of a Romanian interpreter.

A vigil held to peacefully protest the alleged assault escalated into chaos when hooded youths clashed with police and damaged local businesses.

The Bishop of Connor, the Rt Rev George Davison, along with the Rev Canon Mark McConnell, the Rector of Ballymena, expressed their disapproval in a joint statement. They recognized that the community’s anger is “legitimate and righteous,” but emphasized that it should not justify acts of racism or violence.

“Violence against women knows no racial boundaries. The majority of such crimes in Northern Ireland are committed by people who are not from ethnic minorities. The racism and violence that we have witnessed on our streets cannot be excused or explained this way,” they stated.

The leaders urged for peace, appealing to the public to refrain from actions that may incite further unrest and fear.

The current situation in Ballymena draws parallels to previous incidents of disorder in England, such as the disturbances following the tragic deaths of three young girls in Southport last year.
