As tensions continue to escalate between Israel and Gaza, British churches are urged to unite in prayer for peace in the Middle East. The ongoing conflict has prompted church leaders and Christian aid agencies to highlight the urgent need for reconciliation and justice.
Set for Sunday, 21 September, a day of prayer aligns with the UN’s International Day of Peace. This initiative, led by charity organizations such as Embrace and Christian Aid, invites the faithful to reflect on the region’s turmoil. The call to action emphasizes public witness and solidarity.
The organizers stated, “We are witnessing the devastating escalation of violence in Gaza and the West Bank. The cries of Palestinian church leaders for peace and solidarity have echoed across the global Church, urging us to respond with clarity, compassion, and conviction.”
Church communities are encouraged to observe a minute’s silence and participate in #FastForGaza, a weekly fast supporting those in Gaza who are facing severe hunger and destruction. This initiative has garnered support from major church networks including Churches Together in England, Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, and the Church of England.
Dr. Hosam Naoum, the Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, has crafted a special prayer for the occasion. It calls for an end to warfare, the liberation of captives, and aid for those suffering from hunger and loss.
A Prayer for the Holy Land
Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: In your mercy, provide for all those in Gaza and beyond who suffer from hunger and starvation, that they may be given both physical bread to nourish their bodies and heavenly bread to sustain their souls. By the power of your Spirit, bring a speedy end to this cruel war, the release of all captives, care for the sick and wounded, comfort for those who have lost loved-ones, and the opening of a pathway for a just and lasting peace here in the very homeland where your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, ministered during his earthly life; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
