This past Wednesday, the serene grounds of Buckfast Abbey in Devon witnessed a gathering of family, friends, and former colleagues to honor the life of Ann Widdecombe, the distinguished former MP, broadcaster, and author. A private Requiem Mass was held, reflecting her life of public service and deep Christian faith.

The ceremony, exclusive to family and invited guests, saw the Abbey Church closed to the public. The homily was delivered by the Rt Rev David Charlesworth, Abbot of Buckfast, with an Order of Service available online for those unable to attend.

Ann Widdecombe’s passing marked not just the loss of a prominent political figure but also the departure of a dedicated Roman Catholic whose faith was central to her life. Buckfast Abbey fondly remembered her as a “kind and warm character,” acknowledging her “profound faith” and “unwavering convictions” that shaped her political career.

Widdecombe, who passed away on 8 July, was 78 years old. Her death resulted from an attack at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor. Joshua Kerry, a 28-year-old from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, has been charged with her murder.

Widdecombe’s extensive career began as a Conservative MP in 1987, advancing to a prisons minister in the 1990s, and later serving as a Member of the European Parliament for the Brexit Party. At the time of her passing, she was a spokesperson on immigration and justice for Reform UK.

Beyond politics, she was a familiar television personality, appearing on shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother. Her candid opinions garnered both admiration and critique, yet her unwavering faith remained the cornerstone of her existence.

Her funeral coincides with ongoing investigations into her death. Counter-terrorism officers have reopened inquiries into a 2025 alleged firebomb attack on Reform UK leader Nigel Farage’s London residence, linked to the case.

A public memorial service is anticipated later this year, providing an opportunity for the public to honor her memory.

As Buckfast Abbey’s tranquil setting hosted prayers for Widdecombe, many paused to reflect on a life that seamlessly intertwined faith, politics, and public service.
