A Legacy of Faith: The Impact of Dr. James Dobson on Vanguard Church
The story of Vanguard Church in Colorado Springs is deeply intertwined with the influential presence of Dr. James Dobson and his organization, Focus on the Family. As a pastor of Vanguard Church for nearly three decades, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact Dr. Dobson has had on our community.
My journey began at Liberty University, where my wife Tosha and I graduated in 1989. Dr. Dobson delivered the commencement speech, leaving a lasting impression with his poignant message about lasting values. Recalling his days as a UCLA tennis star, he shared, “This world will trash your trophies, but God has a trophy for you if you live for Him that lasts forever!” This sentiment has been a guiding principle in my life and ministry.
Upon completing our studies at Dallas Theological Seminary, Tosha and I were seeking guidance on where to establish a church within the Southern Baptist Convention. A suggestion from Melanie Beroth, Tosha’s friend from Liberty University and a publicist for Focus on the Family, led us to Colorado Springs. Her proposal to start Vanguard Church became a pivotal moment in our lives.
Vanguard Church was officially launched in March 1997, significantly influenced by the presence of Focus on the Family in the area. The early years were marked by the city’s division over Amendment Two, with Dr. Dobson standing firmly on biblical teachings.
Our church quickly became a gathering place for families connected to Focus on the Family. Notable collaborations included an advertising partnership with Magic 98.9 FM, where DJ Rebecca Ireland, daughter of Mike Trout, interviewed us as we prepared to launch Vanguard.
In 2005, as Focus on the Family faced protests from activist groups challenging Dr. Dobson’s views on homosexuality, I joined other local pastors in a meeting led by Dr. Dobson. Inspired by his leadership, I proposed a community discussion on the issue, which resulted in a successful event attended by 1,200 people, demonstrating Dr. Dobson’s openness to dialogue.
Throughout my ministry, I had several opportunities to work closely with Dr. Dobson, including serving on the Christian/Jewish Dialogue board. His transparency, especially during a moment of vulnerability discussing the loss of Dr. Jerry Falwell, left a deep impression on me. Dr. Dobson’s unwavering commitment to his beliefs was a testament to his character.
Dr. Dobson’s departure from Focus on the Family in 2009 was marked by a gathering I organized, called “The Merge,” to honor his contributions alongside the new leadership of the organization. His influence continues to resonate, inspiring leaders to uphold the values he cherished.
As I reflect on Dr. Dobson’s legacy, I am reminded of his steadfast dedication to living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His impact on Vanguard Church and beyond echoes into eternity, encouraging future generations to stand firm in their faith.
