In a recent episode of the “Ask N.T. Wright Anything” podcast, New Testament scholar NT Wright tackled the intricate subject of transgender identity within the Christian faith.

The episode, co-hosted by theologian Michael F. Bird, featured a listener who identifies as a man but was born female and has been living as a man for ten years following an elective hysterectomy. The listener describes herself as a “lover of Christ” and shared her journey of coming to faith after transitioning.

She expressed her concerns about her lifestyle, questioning whether it aligns with her faith, as she does not plan to de-transition, unlike many others whose stories she has heard.

Bird reflected on the complexity of the issue, highlighting the intricate interplay between biology and psychology. “Biology is very complex. A lot of things can go wrong with our biology. Things can also go wrong with our psychology,” he said.

Wright noted that the discourse around gender identity is a recent development, explaining that traditional theological manuals may not offer guidance on such topics. He commented on the current cultural focus on personal identity over biological sex, stating, “People have gotten used to thinking in terms of, ‘Never mind what my body is or how I was physically born, what matters is who I feel deeply within myself I really am.’”

While Wright admitted he has not personally counseled someone facing gender identity issues, he stressed the importance of approaching the topic with caution and sensitivity. He warned against the politicization of gender issues and emphasized the need for grace in theological responses.

Wright addressed the biological aspect by noting the distinction between chromosomes and gender identity. “Females quite clearly have XX chromosomes; males have XY chromosomes,” he stated, adding that he assumes the listener’s chromosomal makeup remains unchanged.

From a theological standpoint, Wright emphasized God’s grace, stating, “God meets us where we are and loves us as we are.” He encouraged a path forward grounded in grace, not condemnation, and highlighted the importance of pastoral guidance.

Wright also discussed the transformative power of faith, referencing the New Testament story of Zacchaeus, whose life changed after meeting Jesus. He stressed the need for “wise, discerning, prayerful pastoral help” to navigate such personal journeys.

In a recent podcast episode, The Christian Post explored the experiences of individuals who have detransitioned after undergoing gender-affirming procedures. It highlighted the role of the Church in supporting those with gender dysphoria.

Forrest Smith shared his story of being prescribed hormones and undergoing surgeries at a young age, only to later regret these irreversible changes. Smith spoke about the influence of the progressive church he attended, which affirmed his gender dysphoria, and the judgment he faced upon detransitioning.

Smith found healing through the guidance of a Pentecostal pastor who provided non-judgmental support and spiritual encouragement, underscoring the importance of repentance and acceptance.
