Efforts Intensify to Locate Missing Children in U.S. Amidst Immigration Crisis
As the search for missing children continues, over 145,000 have been found among the many who crossed the U.S. border amidst a surge in immigration under the Biden administration. This development, announced by border czar Tom Homan, marks significant progress in a complex and ongoing situation.
Multiple federal agencies, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Office of Refugee Resettlement, are collaborating to track down more than 300,000 unaccompanied minors. These children were reportedly lost after being placed with sponsors by the Biden administration without adequate oversight, according to Homan’s statement on X.
“Through their outstanding efforts, they have so far been able to locate more than 145,000! President Trump promised that we would find these children, and under his strong leadership and with his unwavering support, the patriots at these, and other partner agencies have been — and will continue to do — just that,” Homan stated.
Homan’s response came after journalist Nick Sorter criticized mainstream media for allegedly overlooking what he described as “the largest child trafficking operation in U.S. history.” Homan agreed with Sorter’s assessment, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
An August 2024 report by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General highlighted that over 323,000 children who crossed the border remained unaccounted for, underscoring the scale of the challenge faced by authorities.
Responsibility for these minors lies with the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which places unaccompanied children with sponsors. These children are defined by HHS as those with no legal immigration status and no parent or guardian available to care for them in the U.S.
In a related development, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. declared last April that he was ending a purported government link to child trafficking under the Biden administration. “We have ended HHS’s role as the principal vector in this country for child trafficking,” Kennedy stated during a White House meeting.
Despite Kennedy’s assertions, some have accused him of promoting conspiracy theories, a claim echoed by President Trump, who has also spoken about the issue in interviews. Trump asserted that the situation was exacerbated by Democratic policies, stating in a TIME interview that efforts are ongoing to reunite these children with their families.
The Trump administration, since assuming office, has made it a priority to locate these missing children. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem announced in December that 129,143 children had been found, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to resolving the crisis. “Too many of these children were exploited, trafficked, and abused. We will continue to ramp up efforts and will not stop until every last child is found,” Noem affirmed.
