Street preaching in London recently took a contentious turn when a police officer was recorded engaging with two Christian evangelists. The incident, involving members of Mad 4 Jesus Ministries, unfolded at a bustling location outside King’s Cross Station.

According to Mon B, a preacher with the ministry, the officer instructed them to vacate the area in front of the barriers, a directive she relayed to the Daily Mail. During the exchange, captured on video, the officer remarked to the preachers, “These people just want to do their journey, they’re not coming here to listen to you.”

In response, one of the evangelists questioned, “If I was doing a happy, clappy song it would be ok?” The officer, as he departed, expressed his perspective, stating, “I just think it’s all wrong.”

The site of the interaction, a concourse frequented by commuters, served as a backdrop for this encounter. Mon B, reflecting on the exchange, characterized the officer’s comments as “unnecessary.” Notably, a second officer present did not intervene in the preaching activities.

A statement from British Transport Police addressed the situation: “We are aware of a video posted on social media showing an interaction involving an officer outside King’s Cross railway station. Officers were on patrol at the station when they came across a group preaching on private land with a loud speaker which requires permission from Network Rail, and as such they asked them to leave.”

The police emphasized their recognition of religious expression rights and mentioned that the incident is under review by a senior officer.

This encounter is a part of a broader pattern of interactions between law enforcement and street preachers throughout the UK. An incident last year saw the Met Police apologize after a Christian street performer, Harmonie London, was incorrectly informed she could not perform church songs outside church grounds. The incident was notably marked by an officer’s inappropriate gesture towards London.
