Recent findings from a Gallup poll indicate a potential shift in American perspectives regarding sex and gender identity, though a clear partisan division persists.

Gallup conducted a survey with approximately one thousand participants, addressing their views on issues related to sex and gender.

The results revealed that 69% of Americans support the idea that transgender athletes should participate in sports based on their sex assigned at birth rather than their gender identity.

This sentiment was particularly strong among Republicans, with 90% agreeing with this view, and among independents, where 72% were in agreement. Conversely, 58% of Democrats believe that individuals should compete in sports aligning with their gender identity, even if it differs from their birth sex.

Comparing these findings to data from 2021, there has been a 10% decrease among both independents and Democrats in the belief that self-identification should dictate athletic participation. Republican views have remained largely stable.

This trend reflects broader political developments, such as President Trump’s executive order reaffirming the binary understanding of gender shortly after his re-election.

Across the Atlantic, the UK’s Supreme Court has decreed that public policy and services must be grounded in biological sex.

The Gallup survey also noted a decline in the acceptance of gender transition, with only 40% of Americans now considering it “morally acceptable,” down from 46% in 2021.

Political affiliations heavily influenced these beliefs: 71% of Democrats consider gender transition morally acceptable, compared to 45% of independents and only 9% of Republicans.

Additionally, 76% of Republicans attribute transgender identity to external factors, whereas 57% of Democrats believe it is an inherent trait.
