The Vatican is preparing to host a solemn occasion as the late Pope Francis lies in state at St Peter’s Basilica. His funeral is set for Saturday morning, drawing dignitaries and mourners from around the world.
From Wednesday, the public can pay their final respects to Pope Francis until his funeral Mass, which is scheduled for 10:00am in St Peter’s Square. The Mass will be led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, and will see the attendance of international figures such as U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is also expected to be present, as per media sources.
Following the funeral rites, Pope Francis will be interred at St Mary Major, a site of personal significance where he frequently prayed. This decision aligns with his personal wishes.
Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, succumbing to a stroke and heart failure after a period of illness that included a hospital stay in February. His passing was unexpected by many, coming less than a day after his last public appearance on Easter Sunday. Despite his frail condition, he made a poignant final journey through St Peter’s Square in the popemobile, engaging with the faithful and delivering a brief message from the balcony.
In his final moments, he expressed gratitude to his healthcare assistant, Massimiliano Strappetti, for facilitating his last ride through the square. “Thank you for bringing me back to the square,” he reportedly said.
In the wake of his death, the College of Cardinals has begun a phase of prayer and reflection, preparing for the next steps in the Vatican’s future. The ceremonial procession transferring the Pope’s body from the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta to St Peter’s Basilica is set for Wednesday.
