Amidst the celebrations of Christmas, Pope Leo XIV delivered a poignant message emphasizing the need for peace across the globe. During his ‘Urbi et Orbi’ address, he highlighted pressing conflicts and urged the world to prioritize harmony and understanding.
In his heartfelt plea, the Pope specifically called for prayers to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and to bring “justice, peace and stability for Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, and Syria.”
“Let us entrust the entire European continent to the Prince of Peace, asking him to continue to inspire a spirit of community and cooperation, in fidelity to its Christian roots and history, and in solidarity with – and acceptance of – those in need,” Pope Leo stated.
He further emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving disputes, particularly in Ukraine, urging the involved parties to seek “sincere, direct and respectful dialogue” with the help of the international community.
The Pope drew upon the teachings of Jesus, noting the example of forgiveness and sacrifice on the cross as a model for resolving both personal and global conflicts. He stated, “He is the Saviour. With his grace, we can and must each do our part to reject hatred, violence and opposition, and to practise dialogue, peace and reconciliation.”
Moreover, Pope Leo extended his prayers to all victims of war and those suffering due to various injustices, naming several countries and regions facing turmoil, such as Sudan, South Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, parts of Latin America, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Gaza, Yemen, and South Asia.
In his appeal for compassion, he urged everyone to renew their commitment to aiding those in distress, warning against indifference. “Let us not allow ourselves to be overcome by indifference towards those who suffer, for God is not indifferent to our distress,” he declared.
