Rev Dr Malcolm Brown and Kirsty Smith Honored in King’s Birthday List

Honors Bestowed on Christian Leaders for Exceptional Service

In a recent recognition of outstanding service, notable figures within the Christian community have been honored in the King’s Birthday Honours list. Acknowledged for their significant contributions, these individuals have made a profound impact both within the UK and internationally.

The Rev Dr Malcolm Brown, who formerly served as the Church of England’s Director of Faith and Public Life, received an OBE. This honor was given in recognition of his dedication to enhancing the Church’s presence in public discourse over a career spanning 17 years, culminating in his retirement in January.

Dr Brown’s tenure also included his role as Director of Mission and Public Affairs, where he is credited with making “a lasting contribution to the Church’s voice in the public square,” according to the Church of England. Reflecting on his OBE, Dr Brown expressed his deep appreciation, stating he was “deeply moved” by the award and acknowledged the collaborative efforts of his colleagues, saying, “nothing I have achieved could have been done without them.”

William Nye, Secretary General of the Archbishops’ Council, praised Dr Brown’s service, saying he was “delighted” by the recognition of Dr Brown’s efforts, which have significantly contributed to the Church’s mission in the nation.

In a similar vein, Kirsty Smith, the CEO of Christian charity CBM UK, was also awarded an OBE. Her work focuses on supporting individuals affected by sight loss globally, and she has been instrumental in promoting disability inclusion over her 25-year career in international development, including 13 years leading CBM UK.

Upon receiving the honor, Smith emphasized the collective effort behind her work, stating, “This recognition is truly an honour, but it also belongs to the incredible teams, partners, and communities around the world who are working every day to break down barriers and build a more inclusive future.” She expressed pride in being part of a movement advocating for opportunities for all.

Tim Morris, Chair of Trustees at CBM UK, commended Smith’s leadership, noting that her vision has significantly advanced the charity’s mission. He remarked, “Kirsty’s vision and passion have transformed the way CBM UK delivers its mission,” acknowledging her role in prioritizing disability inclusion in development programs.
