In an unprecedented moment for the Roman Catholic Church, an American, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, has been elected as the new pope. Adopting the papal title Pope Leo XIV, Prevost’s election is a historic landmark, as he is the first American to ascend to this position, marking a new chapter in the Church’s history.

The election concluded swiftly with Prevost emerging onto St Peter’s Basilica’s central balcony, greeted by enthusiastic crowds in St Peter’s Square. The conclave was notably brief, lasting just over 24 hours and requiring only four rounds of voting, which Italian Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi described as “a clear sign of the unity of the Church” during a Vatican press briefing.

Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88. Francis, celebrated as the first Latin American pope, was noted for his focus on the marginalized and his views on various contentious cultural issues, which stirred theological discussions among Catholic and evangelical groups.

Prevost’s rise to the papacy defies previous expectations that an American pope was improbable due to concerns over potential U.S. political sway. Yet, his extensive global ministry experience, particularly his service in Peru, has been recognized as factors that made him a compelling choice for the role.

Originally from Chicago, Prevost’s journey in the Church began with his ordination in 1982. He honed his expertise with a doctorate in canon law from Rome, followed by two decades of missionary work in Peru, where he even became a naturalized citizen. His leadership roles included heading the Augustinian order and managing the Vatican office responsible for bishop appointments.

Despite his achievements, Pope Leo XIV, like other high-ranking church officials, has faced scrutiny over his handling of sexual abuse cases within the Church—a persistent and critical issue that continues to challenge the Church’s integrity.

Observers from evangelical circles and beyond are keenly observing how Pope Leo XIV will steer the Church, particularly in theological discussions, interfaith dialogue, and its public presence.
