A significant movement is gaining momentum in the UK, aiming to bring the essence of Christmas back to its spiritual roots by mobilizing 200,000 Christians to spread the Gospel. This ambitious effort expects to reach two million individuals in various public settings during the festive period.

Operated under the initiative named Shine Your Light 2025, the campaign is led by the National Day of Prayer and Worship (NDOPW). It has amassed considerable backing from political leaders and over 60 Christian networks and denominations.

Initially launched in 2023 with participation from over 700 churches, the movement has seen exponential growth. For the 2024 Christmas outreach, involvement has expanded to more than 1,500 churches.

The campaign’s goal is straightforward yet expansive: to reinvigorate Christmas with its Christian significance by bringing carols, messages of hope, and the spirit of Christ to non-traditional venues like streets, shopping centers, prisons, and schools.

Dr. Jonathan Oloyede, the NDOPW Convenor and creator of Shine Your Light, remarked, “Summer is here in all her glory. But before Christians set off for their break, I want to remind the UK Church about Shine Your Light. This is the united campaign by all the churches across the land each December to put ‘Christ back into Christmas’.”

In the previous year, over 100,000 Christians mobilized throughout the UK, sharing the Christmas spirit with approximately one million people in cities, towns, and villages. Dr. Oloyede envisions doubling that number this year.

“I want the UK Church to imagine Christians in schools, colleges, universities, shopping malls, in prisons, in the workplace, on the high streets – everywhere – preaching the gospel, covering the whole land across Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales,” he added.

The official commencement of Shine Your Light 2025 took place at a high-profile parliamentary event in May 2025, organized by MP Jim Shannon, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the International Freedom of Religion and Belief.

The gathering attracted over 100 Christian leaders from diverse denominations and regions, many of whom shared testimonies about the transformative impact of previous Shine Your Light events in locations like Canterbury, Birmingham, and areas of Wales and Scotland.

During the Pentecost weekend in June, a 72-hour prayer session occurred, with organizers urging more Christians to participate in a nationwide outreach scheduled for December 12-14.

Jim Lyon, a representative of the Congregational Federation, encouraged participation, stating, “We did something last December in my community and we saw some truly amazing opportunities to bring people together to hear the message of Christmas.”

He added, “I would encourage every Christian to pray for a key for you to unlock the opportunity to do a Shine Your Light event in your area, using the amazing resources which are available.”

The initiative has received endorsements from notable public figures like Baroness Marsha de Cordova, Jeremy Balfour MSP, Jane Dodds AM, MP Munira Wilson, and BBC presenters James Lusted, Pam Rhodes, and Gemma Hunt.
