The recent murder of director Rob Reiner and his wife has sparked widespread criticism following President Donald Trump’s controversial response. A significant majority of Americans, including many Republicans, have expressed disapproval of Trump’s comments regarding Reiner’s tragic passing.
In a poll conducted by YouGov involving 1,107 American adults, 72% found Trump’s remarks on Truth Social to be “inappropriate,” while only 17% believed they were “appropriate.”
The survey highlighted a partisan divide, with 90% of Democrats criticizing the post. Among Republicans, 55% agreed with the sentiment that the post was inappropriate. Notably, 66% of non-MAGA Republicans disapproved of the post, contrasting with the mixed opinions among MAGA Republicans, where 45% disapproved and 43% approved.
For comparison, responses from other political figures were more positively received. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz’s reaction was deemed appropriate by 89% of those surveyed, while 84% approved of California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s response to the tragic news.
Rob Reiner, a prominent actor and director who supported progressive causes and often criticized Trump, was found murdered alongside his wife in Los Angeles on Dec. 14. Their son, Nick Reiner, stands accused of the crime.
Trump’s post on the incident referred to Reiner as “a tortured and struggling” director whose political obsession had supposedly driven others to anger. The post drew backlash from across the political spectrum, including conservative voices.
