In a time marked by geopolitical uncertainty, European Catholic bishops have taken a firm stand in support of Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. As the war enters its third year, the bishops have articulated their unwavering solidarity with Ukraine and its citizens.
The Presidency of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) has highlighted the plight of Ukrainians affected by what they describe as “Russia’s unjustifiable full-scale invasion.” In their statement, they expressed deep empathy for those who have suffered, including the deceased, injured, displaced, and those defending their homeland.
COMECE has praised the European Union and its Member States for their continued humanitarian and military support. They also acknowledged the vital roles played by civil society, faith-based organizations, and individual citizens in providing aid and shelter to those in need.
Emphasizing the broader implications of Ukraine’s struggle, the bishops stated, “Ukraine’s struggle for peace and the defence of its territorial integrity is not only a fight for its own future. Its outcome will also be decisive for the fate of the entire European continent and a free and democratic world.”
Russia’s actions have been strongly condemned by COMECE as “a blatant violation of international law.” The statement stresses the importance of justice and accountability for the “atrocities” committed and the attempts to alter national borders by force.
The bishops advocated for peace negotiations rooted in “strong transatlantic and global solidarity,” with Ukraine playing a pivotal role in the dialogue as the victim of aggression. They insist that any agreement must uphold international law and provide effective security guarantees to prevent future conflicts.
The peace accord, according to the bishops, should facilitate the reunion of Ukrainian families and ensure they live with dignity, security, and freedom in their independent homeland. Importantly, the rights of all communities, including the Russian-speaking minority, need protection and respect to foster long-term reconciliation.
Given the war’s extensive destruction, COMECE calls for international support in Ukraine’s reconstruction, asserting that “Russia, as the aggressor, must adequately participate in this effort.”
Regarding Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU, the bishops urged the Union to proceed with its enlargement in a “timely and fair manner,” extending this consideration to other candidate nations as well.
As global security dynamics evolve, the bishops hope that the EU will continue to be “a promise of peace and an anchor of stability” across the region and beyond. In the Lenten season, COMECE encourages Christians to “entrust Ukraine and Europe to our Lord Jesus Christ.”
