Anthony Pierce, previously serving as the Bishop of Swansea and Brecon, has received a prison sentence exceeding four years following his admission to sexual offences against a minor. The offenses, dating back to the 1980s, emerged only recently in 2023 when the victim disclosed the incidents to his family and church safeguarding personnel.

The abuse, occurring during piano and organ lessons, was described by prosecutor Dean Pulling, who stated, “They were alone together, the defendant was the family priest, his parents believed their son was safe with him.” He further noted that the vicar’s behavior became normalized, with Pierce attempting to kiss and touch the victim sexually on a fortnightly basis.

Another unreported allegation from 1993, involving a separate boy, was not referred to the police by the Church in Wales until 2010. By this time, the alleged victim had passed away, preventing further legal action.

The surviving victim shared the profound impact the abuse had on his life, expressing in an impact statement, “The biggest consequence has been my emotional development.” He reported feelings of embarrassment and shame, which led to alcohol use as a coping mechanism, affecting his education, career, and personal relationships.

Upon learning of Pierce’s guilty plea, the victim felt a sense of vindication, noting, “I felt vindicated and feel I’ve been released from something that’s had a hold of me over the years. I know he’s responsible for a great deal of how my life has turned out.”

Keith Edwards, Pierce’s defense attorney, acknowledged Pierce’s awareness and remorse regarding his crimes. Given Pierce’s advanced age of 84 and health concerns, it was suggested that he might not survive his prison term.

Detective Inspector Sharon Gill-Lewis from South Wales Police praised the victim’s bravery, stating, “I commend the bravery of the victim in reporting Anthony Pierce’s actions, which was instrumental in helping bring him to justice.”

The Church in Wales issued a statement condemning Pierce’s actions and acknowledging the severe breach of trust involved. They remarked, “Anthony Pierce has abused his position, disgraced his church and, worst of all, has inflicted appalling and lasting trauma on his victim.” Offering an apology to the victim, they voiced their support and prayers.

For those affected by similar issues, support is available through the Church in Wales safeguarding team or Safe Spaces, a confidential service for individuals abused within the Church of England, the Catholic Church in England and Wales, or the Church in Wales.
