Pastor John MacArthur Delivers Video Message Amid Health Recovery

John MacArthur’s Recovery: Addressing the Shepherds Conference Amid Health Challenges

Pastor John MacArthur is recovering after seven weeks in hospital.

Pastor John MacArthur, known for his leadership at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, recently addressed the Shepherds Conference through a video message. This appearance marked his first public communication following a significant hospitalization period spanning seven weeks due to complications from heart and lung surgeries.

In the video shared on social media, MacArthur, aged 85, candidly shared his current health status, expressing gratitude for the support he has received. He acknowledged the decline in his physical strength and the ongoing recovery process he is undergoing with the aid of physical therapists and trainers.

“I want to say grace to you, all [of] you who are at the Shepherds Conference. For me, it’s the highlight of the year, so you have to know my disappointment in coming to you through video,” he conveyed to the conference attendees. Despite his recovery not progressing as swiftly as he had anticipated, he mentioned feeling well overall.

MacArthur expressed appreciation for the prayers and unwavering support from his followers, adding, “I realize I’m on the last lap. That takes on a new meaning when you know you’re on the short end of the candle. I am all thanks and praise to God for everything He’s allowed me to be a part of and everything He’s accomplished by His Word in these years of ministry. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord, Jesus Christ.”

His video address was presented at the conference, which took place from March 5-7, and later made available online.

The pastor’s extended hospital stay earlier this year was necessitated by breathing difficulties experienced in January, leading to further treatment. Phil Johnson, executive director of Grace to You, MacArthur’s ministry, previously indicated that the pastor required continuous medical evaluations and therapy. Johnson advised against undue speculation regarding MacArthur’s condition and emphasized that only a select few were privy to the complete details of his health situation.

By February, updates from church leaders confirmed MacArthur’s discharge, noting that he was recuperating at home under medical supervision. Regular therapy has been advised to aid in rebuilding his strength.

Having served as the senior pastor of Grace Community Church since 1969, MacArthur’s ministry includes delivering numerous sermons, authoring books, and reaching global audiences through various media. Despite recent health challenges interrupting his routine, he continues to engage in limited speaking roles as his health permits.
