Political Upheaval in Texas as Paxton Unseats Cornyn with Trump’s Endorsement
In a dramatic turn of events, the Texas Republican primary for the U.S. Senate witnessed Ken Paxton, the state’s Attorney General embroiled in various controversies, emerging victorious. This victory was significantly bolstered by an endorsement from former President Trump, effectively ending the tenure of the long-standing incumbent, Sen. John Cornyn.
The primary, noted as the most expensive in Senate history, saw Republicans investing $100 million. Both Cornyn and Paxton advanced to the runoff after neither secured a majority in the initial March primary. Recent polling indicated a shift in favor of Paxton, a trend further amplified by Trump’s support during early voting.
“Whenever I’m around him, good things happen,” Paxton expressed in Katy, Texas, following the endorsement. “Good things happen to me and good things happen for Texas. So I love Donald Trump.”
This race has surfaced divisions within the Republican Party, with Democrats eyeing the Senate seat as potentially winnable. Paxton’s triumph underscores Trump’s enduring influence over the party, despite fluctuations in his approval ratings and internal party challenges.
Historically, a Democrat has not claimed a statewide office in Texas since 1994. The Democratic Party has positioned state Rep. James Talarico as their nominee, circumventing a May runoff. The party is optimistic about a “blue wave” reclaiming congressional control, buoyed by dissatisfaction with Trump administration policies.
Paxton’s campaign was not without controversy. His political career has been marred by legal challenges, including criminal indictments, whistleblower claims, and a Texas House impeachment. Although acquitted by the Texas Senate, personal issues such as his estranged wife, Sen. Angela Paxton, filing for divorce, added to the tumult.
Despite these controversies, Paxton’s supporters view his resilience in adversity as a testament to his strength. They criticize Cornyn for collaborating with Democrats on gun legislation post-Uvalde shooting and his reluctance to dismantle the Senate filibuster for the Trump-endorsed SAVE Act.
Sen. Cornyn has articulated his concerns about Paxton’s nomination, fearing it may alienate voters in the general election. “I’ve always believed in the politics of addition, not subtraction,” Cornyn stated, emphasizing his role in expanding the Republican Party.
Despite Trump’s unexpected endorsement of Paxton, Cornyn’s campaign continued to push forward. With a career beginning as a state district judge in the 1980s, Cornyn eventually ascended to the U.S. Senate in 2002, serving as Senate majority whip. However, Cornyn’s bipartisan efforts have alarmed some MAGA supporters.
As the race unfolds, political analysts like Brandon Rottinghaus from the University of Houston warn of potential challenges in rallying Republican unity after such a contentious primary. “The stain of the fight has left a lasting problem for unity among Republicans,” Rottinghaus noted, pointing to possible voter disengagement or shifts to Democratic support as potential threats to Republican cohesion come November.
