President Trump Renews Threat to Harvard’s Tax-Exempt Status
President Trump has intensified his criticism of Harvard University, once again threatening its tax-exempt status. This escalation comes as part of a broader conflict between the Trump administration and the prestigious university, which boasts the world’s largest endowment.
In a recent Truth Social post, Trump stated, “We are going to be taking away Harvard’s Tax Exempt Status. It’s what they deserve!” This latest statement adds to previous remarks where Trump suggested taxing Harvard as a “Political Entity” due to its alleged political activities.
Earlier this year, the administration accused Harvard of failing to safeguard Jewish students and issued a list of demands that the university needed to comply with to avoid losing $9 billion in federal funding. Harvard’s president rejected these demands, citing them as illegal and an overreach into the university’s academic freedom.
Following the refusal, the government froze over $2.2 billion in federal funding, escalating tensions further.
Debate Over Tax-Exempt Status in Higher Education
Most educational institutions, including Harvard, enjoy tax-exempt status, which they share with charities and religious organizations. This status has allowed elite universities to build substantial endowments, with Harvard’s surpassing $50 billion, making it the largest globally.
The debate over tax exemptions is not new. In 2017, Congress implemented a 1.4% tax on university endowments, targeting wealthy institutions. Although a president cannot directly revoke tax-exempt status, they can urge the IRS to investigate.
In response to the administration’s actions, Harvard has sued the Trump administration, arguing that the federal moves violate the First Amendment and do not adhere to legal procedures. The case is set for an expedited trial this summer, as reported by The Crimson.
