Las Vegas activist Beth Osborne’s journey to protect abortion rights

This story first appeared in The Nevadan

Beth Osborne, a Las Vegas writer and activist, is advocating for Nevada voters to approve Question 6 on the upcoming ballot, aiming to ensure the protection of legal abortion in the state. She shared her personal experiences with The Nevadan’s special correspondent, Bonnie Fuller.

Beth Osborne’s Early Experience

Beth Osborne faced a life-changing moment on her 18th birthday when she had an abortion. As a senior in high school living in the conservative town of Miller’s Creek, North Carolina, Osborne was dating an older, controlling man at the age of 17. Despite her knowledge of birth control, she found herself unexpectedly pregnant.

Upon discovering her pregnancy, Osborne, with the support of a close friend, consulted a female OB-GYN who confirmed the pregnancy. With her aspirations set on college, Osborne was determined to have an abortion, a decision complicated by North Carolina’s requirement for parental consent for minors.

The Journey to Obtain an Abortion

Raised by a single mother battling leukemia, Osborne chose not to burden her mother with her situation. She sought a judicial waiver to bypass the parental consent requirement, but her request was denied. As her 18th birthday approached, Osborne scheduled the procedure at a clinic, where she confronted protesters and underwent the legally mandated ultrasound.

The relief following the abortion was accompanied by physical pain, but Osborne knew it was the right choice for her future. Her focus remained on pursuing higher education, a path that led her to Wake Forest University and eventually to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Charlotte for her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, respectively.

Advocacy for Reproductive Rights

Osborne’s personal history fuels her current work with Planned Parenthood and Indivisible in Nevada. She is actively campaigning for the passage of Question 6, a constitutional amendment to preserve abortion rights in Nevada.

Reflecting on the national landscape, Osborne notes the regression in women’s reproductive rights, especially after the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade. She stresses the importance of solidifying these rights in state constitutions to protect future generations.

Personal Challenges and Triumphs

Osborne’s life was further complicated by a series of health challenges, including an ovarian cancer diagnosis at 23. Her journey through multiple surgeries and eventual hysterectomy underscores her resilience. Despite societal pressures to consider motherhood, Osborne remained steadfast in her decision not to have children, focusing instead on her health and advocacy work.

Combating Stigma and Promoting Awareness

Osborne’s involvement with Indivisible Las Vegas has been transformative, leading her to become an influential voice in the fight for reproductive rights. She actively uses social media to engage Nevadans in supporting Question 6.

Her decision to publicly share her abortion story was inspired by other women’s testimonies, emphasizing the need to push back against the stigma surrounding abortion. With ongoing political challenges to abortion rights, Osborne is committed to ensuring Nevada’s constitutional protection of these rights, viewing it as critical to preserving bodily autonomy.

Editor’s note: Blanche said the administration was working toward making the Dobbs decision “permanent in every single state.” The Justice Department said afterward that his comments concerned mail-order abortion medication rather than broader federal action affecting state abortion laws.
