North Carolina Senate Race: Roy Cooper and Michael Whatley Set to Compete
In a highly anticipated race, former Governor Roy Cooper and RNC Chairman Michael Whatley are both setting their sights on North Carolina’s open U.S. Senate seat. This competition is expected to be a significant event in the upcoming election cycle.
Cooper, who successfully served as governor for two terms—winning in both 2016 and 2020 despite Donald Trump’s victories in the state—has given hope to Senate Democrats. They are optimistic about his chances to secure a win and potentially assist in reclaiming the Senate majority.
Cooper’s candidacy was initially reported by Axios.
Michael Bitzer, a political scientist from Catawba College, emphasized Cooper’s appeal, stating to WRAL, “If you asked any D.C. Democrat who their top choices would be for the party’s nomination in North Carolina, their number one, two, and three picks would be Roy Cooper.”
On the Republican side, Whatley, who previously chaired the North Carolina Republican Party, was selected by Trump to lead the RNC in 2023. His appointment is linked to his acceptance of debunked conspiracy theories regarding the 2020 presidential election.
In a radio interview from November 2020, Whatley commented, “Regardless of how these lawsuits come out around the country with the presidential race, we do know that there was massive fraud that took place. We know that it took place in places like Milwaukee and Detroit and Philadelphia.” His sentiments were echoed again in January 2021 when he stressed the importance of discussing election integrity.
North Carolina stands out as a battleground state, where Vice President Kamala Harris managed to improve upon Joe Biden’s previous performance. Despite Trump winning the state by a three-point margin, Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein secured a decisive 14-point victory in the governor’s race. Stein’s success is partly attributed to his opponent, former Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, whose history of far-right views and controversial statements likely hindered his campaign.
Whatley supported Robinson’s bid for governor.
Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, who is retiring, advised fellow Republicans to “learn a lesson” from Robinson’s defeat, cautioning against moving too far right politically.
The Cook Political Report has labeled the upcoming North Carolina senate race as a “toss-up,” underscoring its unpredictability and potential impact on the future political landscape.
