Wisconsin Gubernatorial Candidate Tom Tiffany Advocates for Strict Abortion Restrictions
Tom Tiffany, a Republican representative for Wisconsin’s 7th District since 2021, has declared his candidacy for governor. Known for his strong anti-abortion stance, Tiffany supports a comprehensive abortion ban without exceptions for rape, incest, or even the life of the mother.
Tiffany’s political record includes endorsements from prominent anti-abortion organizations such as Wisconsin Right to Life and Turning Point USA. In 2023, as part of the Republican Study Committee, he co-authored a fiscal year 2024 budget proposal that endorses the Life at Conception Act, a law extending personhood rights to fetuses and embryos.
Advocates have raised concerns that this act could equate abortion to murder, potentially leading to criminal charges for both patients and healthcare providers. The federal nature of the Life at Conception Act would supersede state laws, impacting states where voters have chosen to protect or expand abortion rights since the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The legislation could also affect access to in vitro fertilization and other fertility treatments, drawing concern from various quarters. Despite the fiscal year 2024 budget not becoming law, the Republican Study Committee has continued to support the Life at Conception Act in subsequent budget proposals for 2025 and 2026.
Support for the budget proposal was strong among anti-abortion groups. The vice president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America hailed it as “the strongest pro-life budget yet,” while Students for Life Action emphasized its role in protecting “innocent human life” permanently and reliably.
Polling indicates a majority of Wisconsinites favor maintaining abortion rights. In light of this, Tiffany, after announcing his gubernatorial run, removed anti-abortion references from his campaign website.
In 2023, Tiffany also supported the Heartbeat Protection Act, aimed at banning abortions after six weeks of gestation, although he has not co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act itself.
As the Republican primary for governor approaches on August 11, Tiffany is anticipated to secure the nomination. His Democratic rival will be determined on the same day.
