Pennsylvania’s Drug Crisis and Military Actions in Venezuela

On February 19, 2025, the quiet town of Tyrone, Pennsylvania, was shaken by a tragic series of events. Pennsylvania State Police discovered three separate heroin overdose deaths in different homes. The victims were aged 25, 24, and 32, highlighting a grim reality in a community grappling with increasing drug abuse.

President Donald Trump has pointed to military actions in Venezuela as a preventive measure against such tragedies. He asserts that targeting fishing boats and detaining the nation’s leader will disrupt the narcotics supply chain to the United States.

These actions have gained support from House and Senate Republicans, despite Trump’s interests shifting towards Venezuelan oil acquisition. This approach mirrors the War on Drugs strategy of the ’80s and ’90s, where increased law enforcement and stricter penalties were believed to curb drug use. However, during that period, overdose deaths and teen drug experimentation rose, suggesting that determined individuals will find ways to access illicit substances.

Anne Case and Angus Deaton, in their 2020 book Deaths of Despair, emphasize that addressing the root causes of drug abuse is crucial. Economic hardship and a widespread feeling of hopelessness, particularly in rural regions, are significant factors driving individuals towards substance abuse.

“Without a good job, you can’t get married or have a stable home life,” Case explained to The Philadelphia Inquirer. “Your community is falling apart. Your sense of connection with other people is gone … [It] made the drug epidemic much, much worse because [drugs] were falling into a community that was looking for a way to numb itself.”

Tyrone fits this description closely. Once a thriving center for paper and textile manufacturing, the town has suffered job losses due to offshoring driven by unfavorable trade agreements and corporate profit motives. With nearly 14% of its population living below the poverty line, Blair County, where Tyrone is located, saw an 80% increase in drug-related deaths between 2019 and 2022.

In the 2024 election, Trump secured 70% of the vote in Blair County. Tyrone reflects the communities Trump has promised economic rejuvenation and a return to former prosperity. Now, as he dismisses affordability concerns as a “hoax” while leading the country into foreign conflict, he appears to exploit the anguish of such communities to justify military intervention.

While the residents of Tyrone see little hope for change, oil companies stand to benefit significantly.

There is a growing concern among anti-abortion extremists, including some within law enforcement, about potentially targeting women who experience miscarriages or stillbirths. Wisconsin state Senator Kelda Roys, a gubernatorial candidate, is committed to preventing such measures in her state.

“When you have the view that abortion is a crime or should be a crime, then naturally you’re going to suspect that someone who has had a miscarriage has taken abortion medication or done something to have caused it,” Roys told our contributor Bonnie Fuller.

“This is of course an incredibly traumatic, physically and psychologically, very painful event for anyone to experience. But then to, on top of that, be treated like a criminal and have your body treated as a crime scene, is just horrific,” she said.
