GOP’s Van Orden Advocates for Repeal of Obamacare as Subsidy Deadline Looms
As the expiration of subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) approaches, Wisconsin Representative Derrick Van Orden has reiterated his stance against the healthcare program. The ACA, commonly known as Obamacare, currently assists 45 million Americans with health insurance coverage.
The subsidies in question, which are set to expire by year’s end unless Congress intervenes, were initially part of the 2021 American Rescue Plan endorsed by President Joe Biden, a bill that garnered no support from Republican lawmakers.
While Democrats are pressing for a straightforward extension of these subsidies, Republicans, including Van Orden, aim to reduce them, reflecting broader opposition to Obamacare. “What we’re trying to do as Republicans here is make sure that we can lay out some very solid legislation that’s going to undo what the Democrats did,” Van Orden stated in an interview with The Hill last month.
Van Orden has previously labeled Obamacare as a “failed program” and has advocated for its complete repeal. His views align with recent Republican actions in the Senate, where they blocked a bill intended to extend the subsidies for another three years. This measure had the support of Wisconsin Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin but faced opposition from Republican Senator Ron Johnson.
Approximately 300,000 residents of Wisconsin benefit from these Obamacare subsidies, and Baldwin warns that without an extension, their premiums could potentially double or quadruple. “We are in a time of great urgency, and really the only workable solution right now is to extend these tax breaks so that working families can afford their premiums,” Baldwin told Wisconsin Public Radio.
Individuals like Chrysa Ostenso from Ladysmith, WI have expressed concern over the anticipated rise in health insurance costs, citing an expected increase of $1,500 per month in premiums. “Our health care system is not perfect, but letting these credits expire will make things worse, more expensive, more out of reach, and more dangerous,” she shared with Spectrum News.
Polling data suggest that Van Orden and his fellow Republicans may not align with the majority of public opinion. A recent KFF poll indicates that 84% of those enrolled in Obamacare support extending the subsidies. Additionally, another KFF survey shows that many enrollees would hold President Donald Trump and House Republicans accountable if premiums were to increase.
Facing reelection next year, Van Orden is seen as one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the House.
