Arcadia Mayor’s Resignation Amidst Foreign Agent Allegations Shakes Community
In a shocking turn of events, Eileen Wang, the former mayor of Arcadia, California, resigned following revelations of her involvement as an illegal foreign agent for China. This development comes at a time when President Trump is engaged in diplomatic discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, highlighting the complex dynamics between the two nations.
According to court documents, Wang, aged 58, reached an agreement to plead guilty to a felony charge for secretly promoting the interests of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) under the guidance of Chinese officials. This revelation has drawn attention to what experts view as a broader strategy by Beijing to influence global affairs, particularly in the U.S.
Between late 2020 and 2022, Wang, in collaboration with Yaoning “Mike” Sun, operated a website named U.S. News Center, aimed at the Chinese diaspora in the Los Angeles area. The Justice Department asserts that this platform was used to spread pro-China propaganda, all the while concealing its ties to the Chinese government.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli commented on the situation, stating, “Individuals in our country who covertly do the bidding of foreign governments undermine our democracy.” He added that Wang’s plea agreement represents a significant victory in the ongoing effort to protect U.S. institutions from foreign interference.
Wang’s attorneys, Brian Sun and Jason Liang, issued a joint statement expressing her remorse for her actions. They suggested that Wang’s involvement with the PRC was influenced by a personal relationship, describing her as misled by “someone who she believed to be her fiancé.”
China’s Growing Influence Strategy
As China’s international influence expands, experts highlight the country’s efforts to leverage the Chinese diaspora to sway U.S. perceptions and support pro-Beijing politicians. Nicholas Eftimiades, a former senior U.S. intelligence officer, noted a trend in China’s recruitment of lower-level officials to exert covert influence in the U.S.
For example, a former New York state government employee faced charges in 2024 for acting as an undisclosed agent of the Chinese government, while another case involved a staffer in former Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s office allegedly recruited by Chinese intelligence.
Eftimiades explained that China’s “whole of society” approach extends beyond traditional espionage, targeting societal levels such as mayors and congressmen. This strategy aims to position these individuals to perform various operations for the Chinese Communist Party.
Wang’s collaboration with Sun, her campaign advisor and website co-operator, allegedly included monitoring Taiwanese leadership during visits to the area. Sun is currently serving a 48-month federal prison sentence for acting as an illegal agent of China.
Espionage Allegations Stir Arcadia’s Residents
The plea agreement detailed how Wang was instructed by PRC officials to disseminate content favorable to China’s stance on contentious issues. In one instance, she promptly republished an article explaining China’s position on the Xinjiang issue, following a request from a PRC official.
Arcadia’s deputy city manager, Justine Bruno, acknowledged the gravity of the charges against Wang and the impact on the community. An internal review conducted in December 2024, after Sun’s initial arrest, found no interference in city affairs.
However, some residents remain skeptical about Wang’s complete disassociation from the PRC. Robert Dell, an Arcadia resident, expressed concern about potential ongoing influence, while others in the Chinese community suspect Wang’s actions were intended to shape attitudes toward Beijing.
As the case unfolds, the community grapples with the reality of foreign interference in local politics, with some residents likening the situation to a plot from a movie.
