Chris Shea’s Controversial Stances Stir Debate in Connecticut’s 5th District Race

In a recent interview with WTIC radio, Republican candidate Chris Shea sparked controversy by voicing support for the Iran conflict and advocating for permanent Medicaid cuts. Shea, who is campaigning for a congressional seat in Connecticut’s 5th District, may face Democratic incumbent Rep. Jahana Hayes after the August 11 primary.

Shea, known for his unwavering support of former President Donald Trump, remarked that Trump is “our boss” and emphasized the need for House Republicans to unite behind him. He suggested that Americans feeling the economic strain under Trump’s administration should remain patient for positive outcomes.

“We were handed a really bad economy from the Biden administration, something that Kamala supported wholeheartedly,” Shea stated. “We are seeing improvements, but we’re an impatient bunch, and we need to stand behind those policies and continually point out how we’re headed in the right direction.”

However, public opinion seems to diverge from Shea’s perspective. A Pew Research Center poll highlighted affordability as a predominant concern for voters, with opinions split on which party could best handle economic issues, despite a historical Republican advantage.

Shea’s allegiance to Trump is further evident in his endorsement of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a 2025 law that plans to withdraw Medicaid support from 12 million Americans to finance tax breaks for the wealthy. Shea criticized Rep. Hayes for her lack of support for the bill, asserting his congressional run aims to cement these changes.

The Politico poll from July indicated limited public awareness of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, with most informed voters believing it benefits the wealthy primarily.

On the topic of military action in Iran, Shea expressed support for Trump’s decisions. “What I will say is it’s about time,” Shea commented. “This is, you know, while not a declared war, that country has been at war with us for 47-plus years, and we finally have a leader that was willing to take the actions that the military has known we’ve needed to take forever.”

Contrasting public sentiment, nearly 60% of Americans oppose military engagement in Iran, with 18 U.S. servicemembers reported dead since the conflict began, according to The Silver Bulletin.

While Shea has garnered support from several congressional Republicans, he is yet to receive an endorsement from Trump himself.
