Ohio’s Mike Turner Faces Scrutiny Over Support for Foreign Conflicts
Ohio Representative Mike Turner, who has been a steadfast advocate for U.S. military involvement abroad, is under renewed scrutiny due to his support for the ongoing conflict in Iran. Turner, who has represented Ohio’s 10th District since 2002, is seeking his 13th term in office.
Between March and September 2026, Turner cast six votes against measures to end the Iran war. This conflict has resulted in significantly increased gas prices, with many Americans now paying in excess of $4 per gallon at gas pumps nationwide.
Critics of the Iran conflict view it as a breach of former President Donald Trump’s campaign promise, which he made to avoid initiating new wars during his tenure.
Turner insists that military action is essential to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities. However, some foreign policy experts, including Joe Kent, the former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center under Trump, have questioned the immediacy of the threat posed by Iran.
Public opinion seems at odds with Turner’s stance. A recent Pew Research Center survey indicates that 65% of Americans disapprove of the ongoing conflict and the way it is being managed.
Turner’s support for foreign military actions is not new. He was a proponent of the Iraq War, which lasted from 2003 to 2011, resulting in the deaths of over 4,500 U.S. servicemembers.
In a 2006 interview with KPBS, Turner criticized those who opposed the Iraq War, stating, “I regret that this issue, of Iraq, continues to be made a political issue. Something as simple as the war on terror, where we should have full and unanimous support from everyone, turns into a litany of political complaints and assaults on the administration.”
Furthermore, in 2018, Turner described the airstrikes on Syria ordered by Trump as a “necessary action.”
According to OpenSecrets, Turner has been a significant recipient of financial contributions from the defense industry, receiving over $2 million throughout his career. As of 2024, he was ranked ninth in terms of defense industry contributions among lawmakers.
This election cycle, Turner faces Democratic challenger Kristina Knickerbocker, an Air Force veteran who has publicly stated her intention to vote against the Iran war if elected. “As a veteran, I know the true cost of war,” Knickerbocker said. “I would never vote to send our troops into harm’s way without a plan, a purpose, and the full authorization of Congress.”
